Making Space || 1:5 Model
Philip Estrada || 12th Grade Physics/Engineering
For my Making Space furniture piece, I decided I wanted to make a seating area that was a comfortable place to work independently. I, personally, enjoy sitting in small spaces, so I wanted to make a chair that fit that description.
Throughout this project, we have made multiple prototypes in order to prepare for our full scale model. We started with a small foam prototype, no specific measurements required. Then, we made 1:10 scale models with small scraps of material around the shop. I ended up having to make another because after I finished, I realized I needed to make my full scale measurements larger. After that, we started on our first round of 1:5 models. Once we finished those, we had to come up with a shopping list of the actual materials we were planning to use for the full scale, and take that down to the second round of 1:5. This was in order to make a perfect 1:5 scale model. |
Making Space || Final Build
Phillip Estrada || 12th Grade Physics/Engineering
For our final build, my group and I decided to make a sign that incorporated every single senior in our Class of 2019. We started with coming up with an idea, so instead of making a simple sign with everyone's signatures on it in pen, we decided to challenge ourselves by laser cutting all of the signatures into the backing. We also wanted the sign to have some dimension and complexity, so we used the X-Carve to cut out the "SENIORS 2019." I, personally think this project ended up being far more difficult than we had anticipated because we didn't realize how much time all of the small details in the signatures were going to take.
During this project I took on the role of the project lead. This meant that I was in charge of most of the communication between the group and Phil. I really enjoyed taking on this role because I was in charge of making edits to the daily log everyday and kind of helping wherever my group members needed me. I spent a lot of time working with Gabe on all of the computer work. I helped him with all of the small details when organizing and image tracing all of our signatures. I am very happy with the final product of our sign because I really like all of the personality within all of the signatures. I hope that we can possibly inspire other senior classes after us to make a sign of their own, with their own adjustments, and hopefully start a tradition.
