Lines in the Water
11th Grade Humanities/Biology || Rachel Angeles and Brandon Davidson
In this project, students explored the San Diego fishing industry throughout the past, present, and future with research, field trips, interviews, etc. Students decided which subtopic under the umbrella topic of "San Diego Fishing," in order to write an essential question to base an article off of. Students chose topics like environment, economics, management, history, and so many more that related to the local San Diego fisheries. Students researched online and interviewed people in the field in order to compile an entertaining, informative article based on their topic of choice. The final product was a book compiled of all 50 students journalistic articles and original visual pieces, professionally organized into the different subtopics.
The most significant part about this project was the sophisticated nature of the final product and exhibition. Every other project that I've done throughout my time at High Tech High Media Arts has had a really flashy, complex final product which were really fun to be apart of, however it was nice to have a change. I have never had such a mature, well-developed exhibition which was extremely exciting for me to be apart of because it really felt like an 11th grade project, even though I wasn't insanely interested in the overall topic. The best piece of work I have produced throughout the duration of this project was my final article because I took a lot of time to figure out how to write an entertaining, journalistic article. Seeing this, I am really proud with how the final product turned out. On the other hand, the most challenging part about this project was finding an interest in the overall topic just because I'm not the most interested in the fishing industry. This was the biggest struggle when trying to pick out an essential question because none of the subtopics caught my attention so I changed my essential question several times before finally sticking with my final. One thing about this project that has stuck with me was my researching skills and writing a research article that is also entertaining. I think this is a really important skill to have fo the rest of my life.
